Bike Carson Photos of the Week

It’s time for another installment of the Bike Carson Photos of the Week. This week we have a mixed collection of photos, ranging from the beauty of winter to the hope of the coming summer.

Amy Snowshoeing Baldy Green
Amy Snowshoeing the Baldy Green Trail by Jeff Potter

First up is a photo of Amy snowshoeing the Baldy Green Trail on January 23rd. This picture was taken just a week after we rode mountain bikes on this trail. We haven’t been getting much precipitation from the recent storms, so we should be riding this trail again real soon!

Winter Legs

Here’s a photo from Brent, a pretty good image of how many have been getting their winter miles in. Cycling videos, tunes, wind machine, and a beer fridge nearly in reach.

Jon Flume 2
The Flume Trail by Jon Bakkedahl

Here’s a photo of a Flume Trail ride from Jon Bakkedahl. It looks pretty hazy, so there must have been some fires raging that day. The Sand Harbor peninsula can be seen jutting out below. Man, I can’t wait to get back up there!

These next two photos are a couple that my grandparents took back in 1946 while out on a bike ride in Maine. I actually got to see these two bikes before they sold them a few years ago. I bet they made some lucky collector pretty happy. Last summer they told me stories of the all day trips they liked to do in the Boston area, that included a return trip home on the train.

Bike Carson Photos of the Week

Wow! What a change from last week when we did our first dirt ride of the year. It’s been a rough week for riding here in Carson City. We’ve had some of the most challenging conditions of the winter. Although it hasn’t been particularly cold, there have been frequent snow storms, and the roads have remained icy most of the week. I can’t say enough about how much I love my studded snow tires, and how much I’ve grown to rely on them. I can’t even imagine commuting to work this winter without them. Thankfully the daylight is slowly returning to us, and each day is noticeably brighter than the last. It won’t be long before headlights aren’t needed at 5PM.

This week’s photo theme is Winter Commuting. Pretty fitting, since there wasn’t much else to do this week on a bike! You’ll also notice the sub-theme of self portraits. Yeah, we were bored…

Bike Carson Photos of the Week

Here’s another selection of photos from the Bike Carson Flickr Group!

First up is Nevada Cement by Brent Ruybalid. Anyone who has ridden the mountains on the east side of town is familiar with the sticky gumbo, Nevada Cement. It sticks to everything, and sometimes even makes forward momentum impossible. I’ve been caught in a muddy rainstorm before, and had to literally drag my bike back to the car because the wheels would no longer move!

Here’s another photo from Antoine at I Bike NZ, reminding us of the plentiful sunshine in the southern hemisphere.

Finally, here’s a self portrait I did with my Gorillapod tripod and self timer in front of the Brewery Arts Center. These little tripods are very handy with their grippy flexible legs, and come in a few different sizes. I have the smallest model, and it fits easily into my pack.

It’s time once again for the Bike Carson Photos of the Week!

Campbells Bay Beach

The first picture is of Campbells Bay Beach from Antoine in Auckland, New Zealand. Antoine writes over on his blogI Bike NZ, and is enjoying a nice summer right now. Go check out his blog for a much needed dose of sunshine! Trivia: Antoine designed the Bike Carson logo for us!

Another cool photo from Antoine of his Surly Cross-Check, Suburban Assault.

finally some hard snow by Scott Meikrantz

Scott M and Ron rode the McClellan Peak area a couple days after we did. It looks like they had a lot more sun, and a lot more mud!

Here’s another winter riding shot from Dan Turner. Skinny tires on a snowy Long Street.

Winter Rewards

And finally, we have “Winter Rewards” from Brent Ruybalid. I might have called this one Winter Survival. I know where I’m going this weekend…

Bike Carson Photos of the Week

Well, Christmas is finally over, and I hope you are all recovering nicely. I have one more party to go to, but then hope to return my gastrointestinal system back to its regularly scheduled programming.

It’s been a rough few weeks for cycling in Carson City! I think I’ve only been out on non-studded tires three times in the last three weeks. It’s unbelievable how long this ice and snow is lingering, even in the full sun. Here are a few photos from the Bike Carson Flickr Pool that really convey the wintry conditions.

First Storm by Dan Turner

The first photo is of Dan Turners Pugsley from Surly Bicycles. The Pugsley frame and fork is designed for the allowance of 4″ tires on 26″ rims! The overall diameter of these big wheels is right around 29″. As you can imagine, this bike will take you far beyond where regular bikes are stopped dead in their tracks.

Here’s another photo from Dan. Here we see the Pugsley dicing it up in traffic.

Homemade Ice Tires by Jesse Richardson

Jesse has been working on building a set of homemade ice tires. They are still in the laboratory, but should be ready for beta release by the next big storm.  Here’s a photo of the progress so far.

Bike Carson Photos of the Week

Welcome to this week’s installment of Bike Carson Photos of the Week. Keep those great photos coming!

Tightrope by Jesse Richardson

Hey, it’s a picture of me! This one was taken by Jesse Richardson on our spring exploration ride up above Lakeview and Washoe Valley. Seems like only yesterday we rode that. What a view that was!

Self Portrait by Brian Gurd

Next up is our first non-local submission. This self portrait was taken by Brian Gurd from the Grand Rapids, Michigan area. Notice that classy Carson City Bike Habitat bottle in the cage! Brian joined us back in June for some riding up in Tahoe, and I got to visit his stomping grounds a week later! I didn’t have time to check out Brian’s trails, but he did hook me up with some great local beer.  Check out the Michigan cycling world over on Brian’s blog.

“This is a bit close…” by Jeff Resler

And finally, we have another photo submitted by Jeff Resler. This is a photograph of a particularly tight section of the Flume Trail. All that beautiful scenery around, but there’s no looking at it here!
