ABA Unveils new iPhone App

A news release I read yesterday:

American Bicycle Association Unveils new iPhone App

August 30, 2010 – Gilbert, Arizona

The American Bicycle Association (ABA) officially unveiled their new iPhone App today. “Over 13,000 downloads of the application occurred during the 90 days of beta testing and the feedback was incredible. With technology advancing at a rapid pace, we want to stay in the forefront,” stated ABA CEO, B.A. Anderson. “For some time we have been delivering moto sheets via our wireless network at National events. Now with the new iPhone App it will be even easier.” This application is an answer to the request of many of our members. With the weekly airing of the television show on Versus, a monthly print publication, and the new iPhone app, the ABA is reaching out to audiences outside of our membership base to make every effort possible to grow the sport of BMX racing,” continued Anderson.

The iPhone App is available as a free download at the iTunes Store. “I am sure we will be adding even more features to the app to meet the needs of our members,” said Anderson. The new ABA iPhone App includes news releases, schedules, track directory with directions, points, a current rulebook, and a direct link to moto sheets at national events.

I found the app easily on the iTunes store under ABA and gave it a test. It looks like a great app for BMXers, and handy if you’re traveling looking for new tracks.

Carson City BMX Open House

Spring is here, and it’s time to start another season of BMX racing! I’m told the track has been redesigned this year to make it more challenging for the advanced rider, yet still rideable by the beginners.

The track will be having an Open House this Saturday on April 3rd. This gives parents and kids a chance to try the track for free for a day to see if it’s something they’re going to like. My family did it one season, and I was amazed at how friendly and helpful all the parents and kids were. The kids all wanted to win, but they all jumped at the chance to help a new rider out too.

Carson City BMX Open House – Saturday April 3, 2010 – 1pm to 3pm

The track is located in the Edmonds Sports Complex, 1555 Livermore Lane, at the south end of Carson City, accessed off South Edmonds Drive. MAP HERE.

Carson City BMX also has a new home on the web: carsoncitybmx.com. Check the website to see further details, rules, and dates.

Racing Starts – Sunday April 11, 2010. Sign-ups 9am to 10am.

Bicycle Authority in the NV Appeal

Having grown up in Carson City, I have known Dan Turner, owner of the Bicycle Authority, for many years. My neighborhood BMX gang would often run into his BMX gang out at the jumps in an empty lot somewhere around town, and he was always out at the BMX track too. When I got my drivers license at 16, I gave up on bikes for a few years. I’d be driving down the street in my chick magnet, a Datsun B210 station wagon with a dented up driver’s side, and there would be Dan, riding his BMX bike down main street. He’d be bunny hopping, jumping off curbs, and I remember thinking, “Who would be caught riding around town on a bicycle? How nerdy!” And now look at me today…

The Nevada Appeal recently did a “Meet Your Merchant” feature on the Bicycle Authority. Here’s a snippet of the article from the Nevada Appeal:

Dan Turner said his post-secondary schooling wasn’t spent buried in books deep inside a library, but toiling away in the back of a bike shop.

“That’s all I had done was work at bike shops,” said Turner, 44, owner of Bicycle Authority. “I got to learn from owners of bike shops … that really helped getting my foot in the door. That was my own form of college.”

Turner is a one man show at his North Carson City bike shop, spending six days a week inside his spacious store that is covered in bicycle paraphernalia that includes posters of the Death Ride, a 129-mile trek along the California Alps, to former rides mounted on the walls.

Bicycle Authority Memorabilia – Skyway BMX

One thing that makes Dan’s shop unique is all the memorabilia displayed throughout the store. Most bike shops tend to live in the now, dazzling the senses with the latest and greatest. In the Bicycle Authority, though, you will take a walk down memory lane. There are a lot of old bikes and other items throughout the store that aren’t for sale. Brian Duggan, the writer of the NV Appeal article, looked around the store and noticed the old Death Ride posters. I suppose everyone’s eyes focus on something different. For me it’s the old Skyway BMX frame up on the wall. It stirs up memories of the endless summers back in the 80′s when my friends and I would just sit on the lawn, talk about BMX, and think of what kind of trouble to get into next. There was so much free time back then! A Skyway just like the one on Dan’s wall was the last bike of my childhood, the bike that led me on so many cool adventures.

Bike Carson NEWS Briefs

We had our Bike Month meeting last night, and I’m happy to say that the calendar of events was completed! The first 2 weeks in May will have more bicycle events than you can stick a shake at. I’ll get the Bike Month and Calendar pages updated soon.

This Team Wonderbike video really sums up why I like to ride to work! If only there was a celebration like the one in the video when I arrive though! All I get is a pile of email.

Bike More. Drive Less.

Fellow Bike Carson rider Jesse
is in the market for a new bike. He isn’t real familiar with full suspension bikes, so I loaned him my Kona Coiler for the day. Loaning such a brute of a bike isn’t providing the most accurate portrayal of a fully suspended trail bike, but at least the 34 lb free ride rig gave him a basic idea of how they soak up the bumps. I don’t ride this bike too much these days, but it is nice to have if I’m riding a trail with a lot of rocks or other gnarly terrain. The Coiler worked great on last year’s El Dorado Canyon ride! Read Jesse’s account of the experience HERE.

It’s my understanding that the Carson City BMX track will be having their open house this weekend. Volunteers have been out at the track redesigning it and getting it all ready for the season. I’d direct you to the Carson BMX site for more details, but my web browser displays it as a “Reported Attack Site”! They must have gotten hacked.  I’ll get the details sometime today, and update this post.

In the meantime, I’ll leave you with this Rad video from the 80′s (thanks for the video tip, Jesse!).

Rad!

Update! Here’s the BMX info for this weekend (thanks, Tom!)

Welcome to Carson City BMX website. Check us out. If you are interested or have any questions, drop an email or you can call 775-246-3660. In BMX, everybody races, no one sits on the bench.

We start our 2009 Season on Sunday, 5 April 2009. Will hold an Open House on Saturday and Sunday, 28 & 29 March, between 1:00 – 3:00 pm.

Anyone can ride the track as long as they complete a free one day membership/release, have a helmet, long pants & sleeves, closed toe shoes and the bike is safe…must have functional brakes and bar ends must be covered or plugged. The bike cannot have a kick stand, reflector brackets, fenders, chain guard or freestyle pegs and the axle bolts can’t protrude more than a 1/4″ beyond the nut.

CC BMX has had a crew out there for the last couple of weeks reconfiguring the track and it is being rolled today to pack it in. We will be putting the finishing touches on things tonight to be ready for Saturday. The track is a work in progress and will get better as we continue to massage the dirt, but it would be a good time to check it out and see what Carson City BMX is all about!

Friday

The night ride was a blast, and was mostly successful. We still need to find out what happened to Roger, and we’re currently corroborating our story about a little “accident” we had at the end of the ride. Stay tuned for the full report…

Until then, let’s see what happens when you mix Bikes and Guitar Hero!

Also, here’s what I would do if I had a lot more courage and possibly a jet pack…

Finally, I’d like to share a couple photos of the wildlife we encountered on the trail this week. This flock of Biker Chicks seemed unafraid, but cautious of our presence. Unfortunately they flew off when Scott R got closer, trying to offer them Clif Bars.
