Cycling really is pretty simple. Just hop on and ride. But like most things we do, we tend to make it way more complicated than it needs to be. Have you ever caught yourself saying something in this video?

Radwanderung
Radwanderung. According the the translator I used, it’s German for “bicycle tour”. There has to be better words in German to describe this video though.
The older I get, the more steep drop-offs scare me. You can add this trail to the list of ones I’d never ride. I’m not sure I’d even walk it. I had to pause the video part way through to catch my breath!
Thanks to AHTBM for sharing the video!
Bike Carson Theater
It’s been a busy couple weeks for me, and I haven’t had much time to blog. Here are a few videos to watch as I get settled back into my routine.
Bavarian Snow Trails from Big Col on Vimeo.
As I write this post, it’s 10 degrees outside. Winter is definitely here. If you’re thinking about stopping riding, maybe this video will change your mind. According to the caption, it was filmed at the end of November 2010 somewhere in Bavaria.
Too cold? Here’s some video from Carson City’s Jason Gardner from his recent trip to Belize. He was able to acquire a bike to explore some of the jungle trail. Although it was pretty fun he says, you couldn’t stop pedaling or the bugs would eat you alive!
CX Racing on Halloween Weekend from Brent Ruybalid on Vimeo.
This is a video Carson City’s Brent Ruybalid made of a cyclocross race this fall. He says, “The cyclocross season in my area is short. I missed the first race because the bike I wanted was out of stock when we tried to order it. So, I took matters into my own hands and tore down my old commuter and my recently built Ghetto Blaster to build a bike to race. I had to weld a disc brake mount onto the frame and I ordered a rigid fork and some Kenda Small Block 8 tires. When the bike was done I had one week to learn the skills needed for CX racing.”
Mountain Biker vs. Red Hartebeest
There’s always been a debate among cyclists as to which discipline of biking is the safest. Mountain Biking? Riding in the city? Out on the open road? Here’s a video that is sure to give ammo to the riders that prefer to stick to paved surfaces!
Evan van der Spuy of Team Jeep South Africa gets taken out by a Red Hartebeest at a mountain bike race at Albert Falls Dam in Africa.
Industrial Revolutions
Industrial Revolutions is the amazing new film from street trials riding star Danny Macaskill. Enjoy this clip while we’re busy writing up the next post!
A Hill in Spain
A Hill in Spain from chris akrigg on Vimeo.
Here’s something I think you’ll enjoy, a new video from Chris Akrigg, six-times National BikeTrial Champion & Mongoose MTN team rider. It’ll help you remember what mountain biking was all about, and give you some hope that the trails will be open soon! Go away snow, wind, and cold!
March Begins
March has begun, and the great piles of snow have started to melt. There are storms on the horizon, but the temperatures seem to be on the rise. My bike has been brought back into the commuting mix, and the road bike even came out of the shed this morning. The plan is to go out at lunch for some miles and a little hill climbing. I have a feeling it’s going to hurt!

Muscle Powered at Comma Coffee
I was recently riding by the gas station, and got this photo of the rising gas prices. These prices remind me of the $4 gas from a couple years ago. Demand for simple commuter bikes went up during this time, and the bicycle industry shifted focus from racing replicas to producing full lines of great city bikes. The gas prices went back down again, many people went back to their old ways, but the great selection of bikes still remains. I see this being a great year for the bicycle industry, and I’m hoping we have large participation in May’s Bike Month this year!

Gas prices on the rise – Yet another reason to ride!
I think a lot of people feel trapped when energy prices get so high, often blaming someone else that it’s just not fair. What can we do? Bicycle traffic only accounts for about a percentage or less of all traffic modes here in America though. We need to look at what other cities are doing, especially some of those in other countries.
Bicycle Rush Hour Utrecht (Netherlands) III
Check out this video of rush hour in the Netherlands. Some things to notice: A ton of bikes and people walking. People of all sorts participating. Regular clothes and no helmets. A lot of public transportation. A lot of skinny people. It all seems to work rather nicely!
Hope everyone is getting their bikes back out and enjoying some riding!
