“Some say it was Bigfoot, but the socks say Lester”, says Kary Grabow who submitted this photo. Lester was part of a Carson City team that recently participated in a 24 hour race up at Kirkwood. It was said they all raced on single speed 29ers too. That’s pretty cool.

The Great Tahoe Flume Race
The Great Tahoe Flume Race will be held on Sunday, September 12 at Lake Tahoe Nevada State Park, Spooner Lake. The race is a fund raiser for the Lake Tahoe Nevada State Park Backcountry Patrol and is organized and sponsored by the Reno Wheelmen.

Race T-Shirt from the last time the Flume Race was held.
The original Great Flume Race was first held in the late 1980s, produced and organized by Max Jones and Patty Mc Mullen, owners of Flume Trail Bikes. This race was last held in 1994, the start/finish line was at Western NV Community College in Carson City; the “Big Loop” encompassed a climb up Kings Canyon, rolled into Spooner State Park, continued over the FlumeTrail (which at that time had a significant number of portages), and descended back into town via Red House Flume and Lakeview. A record was set for the 40 mile course during the ’94 race by Chris Ryalls with a time of 2:25. Impressive!
The 2010 edition of the Great Flume Race will go back to its roots with the start/finish in the Spooner State Park.
Organizer Kevin Joell adds:
“We are less than a month out from the Great Tahoe Flume Race on Sunday, September 12th. It’s time to start lining up the volunteers we will need to make this event run well. I’m also still in need of a few chairpersons. Volunteers get a race T-shirt and a lunch if they are at the park on Sunday.”
If you don’t plan on racing but would like be part of this exceptional event for a significant cause, the Wheelmen are in need of volunteers. Please contact Kevin at mtb10@renowheelmen.org with the following info: Name, e-mail, cell phone #, T-shirt size, and preferred position.
Thanks!
ABA Unveils new iPhone App
A news release I read yesterday:
American Bicycle Association Unveils new iPhone App
August 30, 2010 – Gilbert, Arizona
The American Bicycle Association (ABA) officially unveiled their new iPhone App today. “Over 13,000 downloads of the application occurred during the 90 days of beta testing and the feedback was incredible. With technology advancing at a rapid pace, we want to stay in the forefront,” stated ABA CEO, B.A. Anderson. “For some time we have been delivering moto sheets via our wireless network at National events. Now with the new iPhone App it will be even easier.” This application is an answer to the request of many of our members. With the weekly airing of the television show on Versus, a monthly print publication, and the new iPhone app, the ABA is reaching out to audiences outside of our membership base to make every effort possible to grow the sport of BMX racing,” continued Anderson.
The iPhone App is available as a free download at the iTunes Store. “I am sure we will be adding even more features to the app to meet the needs of our members,” said Anderson. The new ABA iPhone App includes news releases, schedules, track directory with directions, points, a current rulebook, and a direct link to moto sheets at national events.
I found the app easily on the iTunes store under ABA and gave it a test. It looks like a great app for BMXers, and handy if you’re traveling looking for new tracks.
Leadville Trail 100 Mountain Bike Race 2010
On Saturday, August 14th, 2010 at 6:30 AM, the Leadville Trail 100 Mountain Bike Race got underway. According to the website, “The 50-mile out and back course is in the midst of the Colorado Rockies. Low point, 9,200 feet; high point is Hope Pass, 12,600 feet. Majority is on forest trails with some mountain roads.” Carson City’s Mike Williams was in the group of hundreds that started the race, but among the much smaller group that finished the grueling 100 mile race.
Leadville 100 mtb race 2010 from Kathy Williams on Vimeo.
Mike had been training hard for this race, often sprinting past us while we were up for our leisurely lunch rides up in Ash Canyon. On July 9th though, Mike was in a bicycle accident on Timberline Road that left his back broken in 3 places! I saw him a few days later, limping over to the city pool for some painful physical therapy. I don’t suppose anyone thought he’d make Leadville at this point. But Mike bounced back quickly, continued his training, and was able to make the race! This is a video from the race with some footage of Mike, and his wife Kathy’s words are below:
This video was created by our 13 year old daughter who was ‘race support crew’ for her dad in this years Leadville 100 mountain bike race. Mike (her dad) was forced off the road July 9th while training for this race, broke his back in 3 spots (L2,3,&4) lateral processes. We didn’t think he would be able to make the race – he did and he finished. This is just one of stories of this incredible race above 10,000 feet. She did a great job of capturing the ‘spirit’ of the event. The music is “Wishing Well” by The Airborne Toxic Event.
Some guy named Levi won the race. Here’s how Mike stacked up against the leader and another famous rider.
OverAll – Name – Age – Representing – Total Time – Back – Pace
1 – LEIPHEIMER, Levi – 36 – SANTA ROSA, CA – 6:16:37.2 – +0:00.0 – 15.9
27 – OVEREND, Ned -54 – DURANGO, CO – 7:56:39.4 – +1:40:02.2 – 12.6
268 – WILLIAMS, Michael – 48 – CARSON CITY, NV – 9:41:59.4 – +3:25:22.2 – 10.3
The Overall scores go down to 1022, and then there are pages of DNFs (did not finish). You could say Mike did rather well! Good job, Mike, and congratulations!
Great Tahoe Flume Race
The Great Tahoe Flume Race Presented by the Reno Wheelmen
I found this information about the Great Tahoe Flume Race over on The Bacon Strip!
Race Course Description
“Starting near Spooner Lake at an elevation of 7000’, the course starts up a 4 mile, 1100’ climb to the top of North Canyon. A short descent takes the riders around Marlette Lake and onto the Marlette Flume Trail. Along the Flume Trail there is a mandatory dismount at the rockslide. Once off the Flume Trail, a short but steep climb takes riders over Tunnel Creek Road where a sandy downhill drops riders onto the Red House Flume. Passing the historic Red House, riders begin the brutal climb up Sunflower Hill to 8300’, the highest elevation on the course. A quick descent back to Marlette Lake where the final climb takes you to the finish at the top (saddle) of North Canyon Road. The course is 18 miles with 3100’ of climbing. After the finish, it is a 4 mile downhill ride back to the start. It is important that riders control their speed and yield to other trail users through this section.”

Carson City BMX Open House
Spring is here, and it’s time to start another season of BMX racing! I’m told the track has been redesigned this year to make it more challenging for the advanced rider, yet still rideable by the beginners.
The track will be having an Open House this Saturday on April 3rd. This gives parents and kids a chance to try the track for free for a day to see if it’s something they’re going to like. My family did it one season, and I was amazed at how friendly and helpful all the parents and kids were. The kids all wanted to win, but they all jumped at the chance to help a new rider out too.
Carson City BMX Open House – Saturday April 3, 2010 – 1pm to 3pm
The track is located in the Edmonds Sports Complex, 1555 Livermore Lane, at the south end of Carson City, accessed off South Edmonds Drive. MAP HERE.
Carson City BMX also has a new home on the web: carsoncitybmx.com. Check the website to see further details, rules, and dates.
Racing Starts – Sunday April 11, 2010. Sign-ups 9am to 10am.
2010 Northern Nevada / Tahoe Regional Bicycle Summit
On February 3rd, 2010, Muscle Powered and Bike Carson attended the 2010 Northern Nevada / Tahoe Regional Bicycle Summit in Reno, hosted by the University of Nevada Reno Cycling Team and the Tour de Nez Outreach. Over 40 cycling groups met in the UNR Student Union to give a brief presentation of who they were and what they were working on. The groups represented just about all the facets of cycling that you can imagine, from racing, advocacy groups, trails organizations, city and state government, urban planning, law enforcement, on and off road cycling clubs, disabled groups, various causes, and more!

Post Meeting Social: Mike Henderson, Colin Loretz, Nico Aguilera
Each group did around a 5 minute presentation, and by the end, I think everyone was pretty amazed at how many people are putting in their time to make cycling better in Northern Nevada. Rather than try to discuss all that was presented, I’ve compiled a list of attendees with links to their organizations. Some groups weren’t able to attend, and others showed up that aren’t on the list below, so let me know if your group is not represented or if the links are not accurate. I wasn’t able to find links for all the groups, but it’s nearly complete. Go explore these links and see what’s going on in Northern Nevada! It should keep you busy for a while…
A Special Thank You to Tim Healion, Executive Director of the Tour de Nez Outreach Organization. Thanks for getting us all together and directing the summit!
