2012 Tour of Carson Report

Last Sunday May 6th was Bike Habitat‘s Tour of Carson, an annual event that this year celebrates the shop’s 5th anniversary in business! The Tour of Carson began in 2008 as a way for the shop to say thank you to its customers and the community for their support. The event begins with a 27-30 mile ride around the perimeter of Carson City, and then finishes back at the Bike Habitat for a BBQ.

The mob gathers

The number of riders participating in the Tour of Carson has grown steadily each year. Back in 2008, probably no more than 20 people attended, and it was easy to seat everyone for the BBQ in a small clearing in the middle of the shop. I think everyone was a little surprised this year when over 80 people showed up to ride! My first thoughts were, “Man, I hope Denis and Viola brought enough food…”.

As many people as there were, the sign-ins went pretty smoothly. We also assembled in the back of the shop, which helped corral all the riders for the pre-ride instructions.

Carson City Mayor Bob Crowell joined us for the ride

We were honored this year to have Mayor Bob Crowell ride with us. The Mayor, also on the Regional Transportation Committee, is a big advocate for cycling in Carson City. He has helped with projects like getting bike lanes on Roop Street, the application to become an official Bicycle Friendly Community, and getting more recreational trails in and around Carson City. This was his first Tour of Carson, and he remarked that he didn’t realize Carson had so many hills!

My personal experience on the tour this year was a little different than on previous rides. In recent years, I’ve done the whole ride with my son on the back of a tandem. He’s older now though, and he’s gotten to the point where he wants to ride his own bike. I knew the entire loop would be too much for him, so we came up with an alternative 15 mile loop that was still challenging, but also a lot of fun. He even got to bring along a buddy.

Heading out Snyder Ave

Early in the ride, the route takes you north along Edmonds Drive. This section has the most traffic of the ride, and there isn’t much of a shoulder. It’s a good place to gauge the awareness of Nevada’s new 3-Foot passing rule. For the most part, people seem to get it. There were only a few motorists that buzzed us, even when the other lane was empty. The other challenge on Edmonds Drive was the cold headwind from the north. It had no intentions of letting up, and made me glad I dressed on the warm side.

Happy to be out of traffic and the headwind

When we got to the 5th Street Round-a-bout, it was time for us to deviate from the official course. Instead of heading out Carson River Road to the East, we jumped on the Linear Multi-Use path and headed west. We were all happy to get out of the wind and traffic, and it was a very relaxing part of the ride.

A short break near the freeway underpass

As the path passed under the freeway, the roar of the traffic diminished behind us, and was replaced with the sounds of birds and other wildlife in the wetlands. The Red-Winged Blackbirds were quite numerous on this day, and they zipped and sang as they flew about the reeds. The Linear Path is a great asset to Carson City, and is the perfect model for future paths to further connect cyclists to where they need to go.

Linear Multi-Use Path

After finishing the Linear Path at Governors Field, we made our way over to Curry Street just south of the dangerous narrow hillside section. From this point, all the way down to Koontz, we enjoyed a peaceful ride with the wind at our backs, riding on wide bike lanes. After a short time back on the east side of HWY 395, we crossed back over at Clear Creek Road, and then up the steep hill of Vista Grande Blvd for the final stretch back to the Bike Habitat. Our timing was great, and we arrived at the BBQ just as the faster riders were getting done with their full 30 mile loops. For the next hour or so, we relaxed out back with some delicious food, caught up with friends, and even made a few new ones!

Ride with Carson City’s Leaders

A combination of great weather and growing enthusiasm for cycling in Carson City is getting getting people out there on their bikes, and the ride with Carson City’s Leaders on May 7th was no exception.

Ride with Carson City's Leaders
Assembling at Telegraph Square – Muscle Powered’s Kelly Clark and Lee Harter talk with Mayor Bob Crowell and Shelly Aldean

This annual Muscle Powered event has really grown, since we first started doing it in 2008. The first year we rode with Supervisor Shelly Aldean to work in an effort to showcase a couple bike routes, and demonstrate that one could ride a bicycle safely across town. The following year, a few more riders attended, and we escorted Mayor Bob Crowell to work.

In 2011, we invited the Mayor and the City Supervisors, and we took them out for a ride around Carson’s west side on tandems. Even though the ride ended in a near white-out blizzard, the group had become quite large, and we all had a blast. We were no longer trying to demonstrate to the leaders that cycling was fun and practical. They already knew this, and they were there to show the community.

Muscle Powered decided to step it up this year, and not only did we invite the Mayor and City Supervisors, but the Sheriff, School Administration, Parks and Recreation, Carson City Health and Human Services, and other leaders in our city.  All people that have an interest in creating a safe community for cycling, and promoting a healthy and active lifestyle. And they showed up!

Working with law enforcement was something rather new for Muscle Powered, and was even an area that the League of American Bicyclists mentioned that we were deficient in when we applied for a Bicycle Friendly Community status. It was so great to see Sheriff Kenny Furlong participate this year. And not only did he participate, but he was very enthusiastic and provided comic relief along the ride. At one stop he yelled out, “Someone stole my bike!”, and he wasn’t shy with the siren on his police issue Cannondale either.

The Sheriff brought along a few bicycle cops as well. You would think that with law enforcement along, there would be strict adherence to the rules of the road. As it turned out though, the bicycle cops rode ahead, blocked the intersections for us, and let us ride through without stopping. Just like a parade. I wonder if these guys are available for my morning commute? I could definitely shave off a couple minutes!

This year’s route began at Telegraph Square. We made our way over to King Street, then north on Ormsby for some scenic views of Kings Canyon, Ash Canyon Road to Winnie, then made our way back to Telegraph Square. It was an easy pedal, but enough to work up a bit of an appetite for lunch.  You couldn’t have asked for better weather for the ride either.

When we arrived back at Telegraph Square, the KOLO TV Crew was waiting for us. We took one more loop around the block for them, dinging our bells all the way, and then parked the bikes.

A big thank you goes out to all of those at Muscle Powered who organized the ride! Thank you to the Nevada Appeal and CarsonNow.org for your continued coverage of our events. Most of all though, thank you to our city’s leaders who took the time out of their busy schedules for the ride, and for continuing to make this community a great place to live!

Bike Polo this Thursday

It’s time for Bike Polo! We had a blast playing last year, and by the end of the season, some riders had even acquired what could pass in some circles as “skill”. This Thursday, May 3rd, the ball will be rolling again.

Bike Polo
Polo Match Underway

Although Cycle Polo has been around for over a century, we are playing a newer version of the game called Hardcourt Bike Polo which is said to have its roots in early 2000s Seattle. As the name implies, we play on a rectangular asphalt surface court using a street hockey ball. Polo mallets have all been handmade by the players from old ski poles, plastic pipe, and hockey tape. Here are a few more highlights of the game:

  • Each team has 3 players.
  • Mallets MUST be held in the right hand.
  • A player may hit the ball in two ways: a “shot” or a “shuffle”. A shot is made with either end of the mallet head whereas a shuffle is made with the side. In order to score a goal, a player must hit the ball into the opposing team’s goal with a shot; if the player uses a shuffle, the goal does not count and play continues.
  • Because of the right-handed rule, some players have moved rear brake levers to the left side of the handlebars.
  • You may not touch your feet to the ground during play (known as a “dab”).  If you dab…and you will…you must stop playing, ride to the side center cone and “tap out” before resuming play.  You may, however, use your mallet to touch the ground for balance.
  • Contact is allowed, but only same-on-same.   Mallet to Mallet.  Body to Body.  Bike on Bike.  Mallet to Head or Body to Spokes is not permitted.  There’s nothing more satisfying that stripping another player of their mallet when they think they have the perfect shot.
  • You may ride any bike.  Everyone seems to have their own preference, and each style of bike seems to lend itself to a certain advantage and weakness; for example, a bike with a high seat gives you full leg extension and makes it easier to zip around the court.  The disadvantage is you have a higher center of gravity which may make you less maneuverable or more prone to endos.  Crashes and damage are not uncommon, so leave your Ibis or Trek Madone at home where it’s safe. Instead, resurrect that beater bike from the dark corner of the tool shed.
  • Last year the primary injury was to the shins and knees.  You may consider armor. Secondary injuries were bruised egos. These wounds may last forever.

Bike Polo
Mallet and Polo Bike with front Spoke Guard

Sound interesting?  Come on down this Thursday night to play or just watch.  We rotate teams after each game, match up teams by ability, and everyone gets to play: guys, girls, and kids. We have extra mallets. All you need is you, your bike, a good attitude, and some protective gear.

When: Thursday, May 3rd, 6:00PM
Where: Parking Lot behind the old Colonial Bank at 901 North Stewart Street (across from Smiths on Valley Street)
Disclaimer: Although we just play for fun, it’s not unlikely for a spill or contact. Play at your own risk, to both your body and bike. Helmet, gloves, knee and shin guards are recommended.
