Bike to Work Week Starts Today!

Today kicks off the start of Bike to Work Week and the Carson City Corporate Challenge.

Ride with the City Supervisors

The 2010 edition of the Carson City Corporate challenge saw one upset, a surprise victory(s), and a solo rider determined to win.

Last year The Bike Smith unmercifully trounced two time defending champs Redrock Dental in the Percentage of Participation category. And adding insult to injury, TBS smugly shook the cowbell in the face of disgraced Redrock leader Dr. Drew at the Bike to Work Week Party at the Firkin & Fox. Ouch!

Bike to Work Week Party

After a dismal showing in 2009 NDOT came out of gate running and never looked back. Along the way, NDOT ripped the trophy from clutches of 2009 Highest Mileage category winner USGS (I know, I know, a trophy that I am endlessly reminded that I never gave them. Sorry about that!), and impressively taking the Trips category, too.

This photo shop is so bad I should be fired.

In the Solo category Tammy Steele improved her 2009 mileage by doing more errands by bike, thus increasing her overall mileage and sealing the win.

The 2011 Corporate Challenge is shaping up to an exciting competition. With a few new names added to the list of fourteen teams and three solo riders, this is going to be a great Bike to Work Week!

Ride with the City Supervisors

Left to Right: Dave, Bill, Jeff, Jeff, Pegg?, Jenny, Molly, Chas, Mayor Bob, Denis, Steve, Shelly, Karen, and ?

Showing their continued support of Muscle Powered’s efforts to increase livability in Carson City, Mayor Bob Crowell, and Carson City Supervisor’s Karen Abowd, Shelly Aldean and Molly Walt joined members of Muscle Powered on a ride around the west-side of Carson to promote Bike Month and the Carson City Corporate Challenge.

Ride with the City Supervisors

We experienced a wide range of tandems at this event.  Bill Story, State Bicycle & Pedestrian Coordinator for NDOT, brought his road tandem (which can be expanded to a triple, quad, and even a quint, depending on how many family members are going for a ride that day) and pedaled Mayor Bob on the loop.

Ride with the City Supervisors

Supervisor Shelly Aldean climbed on the back of my mountain bike tandem for the road ride.  I offered to take her offroad on the Flume Trail this summer and she replied with  an enthusiastic HELL NO! Actually she said she would like to do that.  Maybe we can arrange for a BOS Flume ride in late August.

Supervisor Karen Abowd was the stoker on a comfortable cruiser-ish tandem piloted by Muscle Powered president and Bike Carson administrator Jeff Moser.  Karen and Jeff were one of two tandem teams that looked like they could ride all day, the other team being Molly and Dave.

Ride with the City Supervisors

Dave Simpson chauffeured Supervisor Molly Walt around on his recently acquired recumbent tandem (Dave is the man who is responsible for the trails in Centennial Park,  and is the person who inspired me to build trails).  Molly was very pleasant during the ride but seemed to be preoccupied with the entertainment system which comes with the recumbent’s deluxe package.

Also along for the ride was Parks & Recreation Commission Chairman Steve Lasco, Lumos & Associates’ Chas Macquarie, Denis Coyne from Bike Habitat,  Jenny Scanland from Nevada State Parks, and Muscle Powered walk leader Donna Inversin.

Judging by their smiles I think everyone had a lot of fun.

A big THANK YOU! to Ashley, Jenny, and Amy for braving the poor weather conditions and documenting this ride.

Wednesday May 11
Vulnerable Users Procession
Meet at 10:30 a.m. at Greater Nevada Credit Union 911 E. Second

The procession is to support AB328 which amends Nevada’s reckless driving statute to include striking a bicyclist or pedestrian as reckless driving, with penalties up to a $2,000 fine and license suspension. While the law would not of course do everything to protect vulnerable users, its intent is to put drivers on notice that they are sharing the road with these users, and that there will be significant penalties for striking them.
Please come out and show your support!

Flat Tire Repair Clinic at The Bike Smith
900 N. Carson St at 6:00 p.m.

Flat Tire Fix Class at the Bike Smith
First person to name the Three Bees wins a prize

Are you the type of cyclist who loves to ride but has yet to learn the skill of fixing a flat tire? If you would like to learn this valuable and necessary skill you’re in luck. Micky McDowell is teaching a free flat tire repair clinic at The Bike Smith in downtown Carson City. He will demonstrate wheel removal, how to locate the source of the flat, how to repair the flat, and how to reinstall the wheel. All without looking like a grease monkey. If possible, travel to the clinic by bike, and bring a friend.

Bike Carson Photos of the Week

…and we’re back! It was a busy couple weeks of good riding without a lot of time for writing. Let’s get caught up now with a mix of reader submitted photography and some of my own pictures and stories.

First we have some CX championships racing action in Reno from Kary Grabow.

Paul Bass

Here’s a photo from the Bicycle Authority taken by Dan Turner, Paul Bass and his new 2011 Kona Cowan frame.  Who’s Paul Bass you say?  He’s a Kona Bikes pro rider, and is the guy that did a back flip over Ash Canyon road.  Here’s a video of that stunt HERE.

Furly Night Commuter
Furly Night Commuter by Antoine Pethers

Here’s a photo from Antoine Pethers in New Zealand, riding his fur covered Surly, or “Furly” as he calls it. Antoine says, “Riding home from work on the East Coast Bay’s ‘Share with Care’ bike path. It’s nice to be physically separated from the drunks at this hour of the night. Getting warm in Auckland, shorts and a t-shirt at 10.30pm.”

More great photos and writing can be found on Antoine’s blog, Bike Friendly North Shore.

Karate Monkey
Frozen singletrack along the V&T Trail

Winter storms left the foothills covered in snow for days. Cold temperatures made the trails packed and frozen though, and we actually got some good riding in. It was definitely slow going and challenging, but the changing conditions really keep the same old trails interesting!

Lakeview Hill
Ashley Dale dropping down to the V&T

After our cold spell, the temperature warmed up at the noon hour, and the snow became butter cream frosting. Instead of riding on top of it, we were sliding through it, fighting to stay upright. There was walking and crashing involved at times which caused mixed emotions from the riders. Some grumbled, some laughed.  I don’t think anyone cried.  But in the end, it’s still nice to get out. Winter can be tough!

Rainbow Monkey
Rainbow Monkey

Last week the snow left the flats and southern facing slopes, leaving the trails in epic conditions. Hard packed sand with very little rolling resistance and tons of traction. Hero Dirt. One day we even had a rainbow to ride under.

Four Day Trail
Tom on the Four Day Trail

Although the Creek Trail is still under the snow at the bottom of the canyon, all the other trails were open in Ash Canyon including the higher elevation Evidence Trail. Clearing the switchbacks on this trail has never been easier!

Jingle Bell Run
Jingle Bell Run

Last weekend, my friend Brent and I had the opportunity to be ride leaders for the 5K Jingle Bell Run. I stayed up front with the leader to make sure people knew the course, and Brent floated around and helped with problem traffic areas. The runners were all decked out in Santa hats and jingle bells. What a good time!

I ain’t got no brakes!

We’ll finish with this video. Scott Russel demonstrates why disc brakes are a better idea on a snow bike!

These pictures were selected from the Bike Carson Flickr Pool. Instructions for adding your photos to the pool can be found HERE.
