Bicycle Rush Hour Utrecht, Netherlands

In America, you could say that bicycle commuting is a rebellious activity, something only the brave fringes of society would dare attempt. It is something to be honored. We make competition out of it, and even throw ourselves parties for our accomplishments.

Bicycle Rush Hour Utrecht, Netherlands

The video above is from Utrecht, Netherlands. Cycling for transportation is BIG in the Netherlands.  In Amsterdam, bicycles have a 38% modal share of all transportation, and the inner city of Amsterdam actually has closer to 57% modal share. In other words, trips by bicycle and bicycle commuting are simply a way of life, as common has hopping into the car in America. Here in the states, though, our modal share of trips by bike is less than 1%! Hopefully as more and more people give cycling to work a try, they’ll realize that it’s really not that hard, and it’s actually a fun thing to do.

Plaque Stolen From Dentist’s Office

The first day of the Carson City Bike To Work Week Corporate Challenge is off to an ugly start.  Early this morning thieves stole into Redrock Dental and absconded with the office’s Bike to Work Week winner’s plaque!  And the robbery may have gone unnoticed for weeks if not for an alert delivery boy.

Office manager Kimberly Landry wondered why the delivery boy said, “nice cowbell”.  She thought, “nice cowbell? We don’t have a cowbell”. She soon realized the plaque had been stolen, a cowbell set in its place.

Dr Drew was unavailable for comment, but sources said he could be heard hysterically bawling in his office and mumbling the words, “I should have gone
to Bike Nashbar”.    The Bike Smith could not be reached for comment.

Corporate Challenge 2010 Starts Today

Today is the kick off for the Carson City Bike To Work Week Corporate Challenge, and this year  is shaping up to be our most competitive Challenge ever.

The solo category will be a tight race. So far it appears that all of the entrants share a similar distance to their work place and it could be their trip mileage that will decide the winner.

The percentage of employee competition will once again be a close race. While Redrock Dental and The Bike Smith have a fierce rivalry, it could be that newcomers Hair Studio & Spear Me, or Carson Tahoe Hospital Surgical Unit, will sneak up to take Dr. Drew’s coveted plaque.

Who will win the mileage category is anyone’s guess.  USGS team leader Tim Rowe said he plans on winning again this year, but he has some stiff competition with large employers such as Carson City School District, Chromalloy, and NDOT.

This is going to be great year!  Have fun, be safe, and good luck to everyone!

Monday after work a few of us will be gathering at the Feisty Goat for couple of post work brews. Please join us if you can.

Bike Smith

Are you the type of cyclist who loves to ride but has yet to learn the skill of fixing a flat tire? If you would like to learn this valuable and necessary skill you’re in luck. Mickey McDowell is teaching a free flat tire clinic at The Bike Smith in downtown Carson City. Mickey will demonstrate wheel removal, how to locate the source of the flat, how to repair the flat, and how to reinstall the wheel. All without looking like a grease monkey. If possible, travel to the clinic by bike, and bring a friend.

I wasn’t there to witness it, but Jesse busted out his mad skills earlier this week, catching some sick air over some little huge jumps.  But his skills don’t end with jumping.  Shortly after landing the jump, Jesse proceeded to make a delicious taco salad, demonstrating that he has talent in the culinary arts as well.

Dirt to Work Day

Wilderness Trail Bikes declared May 13th Dirt to Work Day. I was running late as usual this morning, but resisted the temptation to take the shortest, fastest route to work.  Instead I took the Lone Mountain Trail that connects Northridge Drive to Roop Street.  I’ve been wanting to get up on this trail, because from the road below, you can see the Arrowleaf blooming all over the hill.  I wanted to see it up close.

Blooming Arrowleaf on the Lone Mountain Trail

Riding the Lone Mountain Trail did not disappoint. The Bitterbrush and Arrowleaf was in full bloom everywhere, and it felt like I was riding the up in the Eastern Sierra instead of a little hill smack dab in the middle of town.

WTB said to “Take some time to appreciate the natural world around you.” Now riding a bike to work certainly helps accomplish this, but I’ve streamlined my commute down to the shortest route, and have it refined down to minutes and seconds. Today’s Dirt to Work was a good reminder to vary my route and seek out new adventures on the daily commute.
