Not a destination trail due to its short length, the Lone Mountain Trail is still fun to ride as a connector trail when riding between two destinations. The trail follows the ridgeline of Lone Mountain, and parallels Roop Street between Northridge Drive and Winnie Lane.
The Northridge Drive trailhead is at the high point of Northridge Drive, just up the hill from Roop Street. Just follow the switchbacks up from the parking lot.
As you ride along the ridge, you are treated to fantastic views of the Northridge neighborhood and the Lone Mountain Cemetery to the east, and Carson City, Kings Canyon, and Ash Canyon to the west.
The trail is fairly easy overall, but there are a couple challenging sections to practice your skills. There is one particularly short, steep, rocky climb that I didn’t make on my singlespeed, but was able to crawl up on my full suspension bike. Because of the little challenges, it’s not a bad place to test out new settings or equipment if you live in the neighborhood.

Roop Street/Winnie Lane Trailhead
The south entrance of the trail is at the intersection of Roop Street and Winnie Lane. Look for the trail entrance just to the north of the cemetery.

Puncture Vine (aka Goat Head Thorn) at the Winnie Lane Trailhead
Be careful when exiting or entering the trail at Winnie Lane though. The trailhead below the Russian Olive tree has puncture vine (aka goat head thorns) growing at the entrance. Instead, stick to the cemetery fence line to avoid getting a flat tire.
3 Stretches to prevent Lower Back Pain
Carson City’s Luke Wold of Wold Fitness shares three stretches to prevent lower back pain from cycling.
P.S. I already teased Luke that he wouldn’t have as much lower back pain if he didn’t ride a 1990 Trek Singletrack! Those old machines are brutal…
Rest up on Saturday, because there’s a lot going on this Sunday! Whether you’re into slow urban cruising around the streets of Reno and Sparks, or mountain biking the High Sierra, you’ll find plenty to do this weekend.

Galena Fest focuses on two major mountain bike races, The Bloody Rose – nearly 12 miles and 4,000 feet and The Thorn – an easier 5 mile ride. New Belgium Brewing spoofs On a Boat with On a Bike
Bike Carson rider Jesse recently tipped me off to a video entitled “I’m on a Boat”, a spoof on the rap video genre (I’ll let you go find the video yourself, since it’s full of R rated language…). New Belgium came up with a spoof to the spoof! I’m on a bike. I’m on a bike. Everyone look at me, cus I’m riding on a bike…
Road bikers rejoice! The city has been doing road surface improvements in Carson City’s northwest quadrant. Cracks have been sealed, and the streets have been resurfaced on many of the main cycling routes. One road that stands out in particular is Combs Canyon Road, since it is part of the HWY 395 Bicycle Route and allows you to reach high speeds on the way down. Previously it was full of cracks and holes that took careful navigation of your skinny tires, but with the new surface, it’s bombs away!
The 2 inch expansion cracks are gone from Timberline Road, making this route once again pleasant to ascend and descend. Mountain Street, one of the main north/south routes on the west side has also been resurfaced. I’m looking forward to improvements on the northeast side too, but not sure when they’ll come. Some of the expansion cracks on Arrowhead drive will knock the water bottle right out of its cage! Until then, enjoy the smooth rolling on Carson City’s west side.
Back in March, Muscle Powered’s Dan Allison created the Carson City Bicycle Rack Database. Dan has taken it a step further, and the bike rack database is now available as a Google Map. Clicking on a rack location brings up a picture of the rack, the address, and a quality rating. Muscle Powered yellow bike racks are shown with a yellow bicycle icon. Another handy feature is that you can click on “Get Directions” and get detailed riding directions to the bike rack from any location.
Another fine job Dan!
