Bicycle Gunman on the Loose

Bicycle News of a different sort from the Nevada Appeal:

A man who attempted to rob the Carson Coffee kiosk on North Carson Streets this morning about 7:30 a.m., fired two rounds at the elderly clerk — missing both times — then fled southbound on a bicycle on Carson Street.

According to Sheriff’s Department records, the man is described as a white male, 6-feet-tall, 170 pounds with blue eyes. His head was covered by a clear-type of mask. He was wearing a tan checkered jacket and riding a red BMX-type bicycle with black handle bars.

The man walked into the kiosk in the Frontier Shopping Center at 1825 N. Carson Street and confronted the clerk with a handgun.

The clerk pushed the gun away and the robber fired two shots. One of the bullets grazed the victim’s lower extremities. The robber then fled. The clerk refused medical attention.

The man is considered armed and dangerous. Anyone who sees him should immediately call 911, said Detective Daniel Gonzales.

Are you looking for a simple bike, but a single speed is just a little too simple? A 1×9 may be for you. 1×9 refers to 1 chain ring up front, and a 9 speed cassette in the back.

I was going to interview Scott R and have him talk about the 1×9 that he built, but he got tired of waiting for me and interviewed himself. I’ll pretend that it was me asking him the questions…

Bike Carson: So what made you go 1×9?

Scott: Originally the bike was a 27 speed. When I moved back to Maryland, there was a nice place for single speeds, so I converted the bike so I could keep up with my riding buddies. The bike is light. When I moved back to Nevada I couldn’t deal with the terrain of just climbing and descending on a single speed. I tried it maybe 3 times, and got the idea that if I had only a few more gears it would be fun.

Bike Carson: How did you do it?

Scott: I always have parts around, so I just threw on a 34 tooth cassette, bought a new chain, left the front derailleur on, and took the left shifter off.  I’m sure there are devices to use other than leaving the derailleur on that would work, but it rarely drops the chain…usually when I’m stopping or something and not actually pedaling.

Bike Carson: So whats the big deal?

Scott: There is no big deal really, but it’s nice having less parts and only what you need. That’s what appeals to single speeders, and since I needed a few more gears, it seemed to fit the bill.   There are very few areas on our lunch rides where I need more gears. 9 is plenty. There is gear overlap in a 27 speed setup, so there are only so many unique gears anyway.

There is something that’s hard to explain about having something simple that serves all your needs. You know…not overkill. I love technology and adjustable travel and such, but this 1 x 9 experiment has really been an eye opener. So much so, that I threw a rigid fork on and adjusted to that as well. I wouldn’t want to ride it in anything rough though. Lunch terrain is basically butter.

The Snow is Back

On Sunday Jeff Potter and I got together to brainstorm some ideas for May’s Bike Month. We decided to have a rolling meeting, and go see what the trails were like while we were talking. It turned out the trails were pretty good!

First we climbed Combs Canyon.

Then we dropped down to the V&T Trail.

Once back to Vicee Canyon, we climbed the Jackrabbit Trail, Postal Route, and took the Deer Run into Ash Canyon.

We took Ash Canyon Road to the top of the Four Day Trail and began our descent back home.

The climbing had been slow going in the accumulating snow, but the descent was fast! My speed downhill was not limited by traction, but by diminished braking power. My rim brakes were wet from the snow, so I was overshooting corners. I had to brake early in the turns to compensate.

We descended down the Four Day Trail, Baldy Green, Deer Run, 7 Steps, Vicee Canyon, and finished up with the Jackrabbit Trail. A mob of deer was waiting for us at the trail head. We told them Marcus was not among us, and they let us go.

Once back on the asphalt it was an easy ride back home to a warm fire and some cold brews. It was a great day of riding, and we even came up with good ideas for Bike Month. Stay tuned for the kick off meeting later this week.

Kona Ute – First Impression

We had some business south of town today, so I stopped by the Bike Habitat to see what was new. Within just a few seconds of entering the store I saw the Kona Ute. I’ve been wanting one of these since they were introduced in the 2008 Kona lineup. It looks like they’ve refined the package some for 2009.

What’s this long bike for? More than just long rides, as Dennis jokingly told me. The Ute is a utility bicycle, the pick-up truck of the bicycle world. Notice the rack on the back, and the long frame. The wooden platform on the back is suitable for strapping down all sorts of big cargo. I’d imagine you could even put 3 twelve packs of beer on the back. Also included with the bike is a huge bag that mounts to the rear (see the website link below to see a picture of the bag). An additional bag for the other side can be purchased separately. It looked to me that the bag could hold at least three bags of groceries easily. This bike comes in two sizes, an 18″ and a 20″. Even with limited sizing, the bike seems to be adjustable for a wide range of riders.

I took the bike for a quick spin in the parking lot, and was surprised that the bike didn’t feel as long as it looked. My tandem feels like pulling a trailer in comparison. The brakes and shifters also felt responsive. I also loved the swept back handlebars. The bike rolls very smooth on its 700x47C tires.

I think this bike is very reasonably priced for all that you get. If you’re looking for more ways to incorporate a bicycle in your daily chores and errands, this bike fits the bill. I’m pretty sure one of these bikes will find its way into my garage this year. It would be perfect for bicycle events, grocery runs, general errands, and trips to the farmers market.

Here are the some of the specs from the Kona Website:

Friday Motivation

I like to read Swobo’s blog, How to Avoid the Bummer Life. There’s always something to smile or laugh about over there. Recently they had some good links to create your own funny stuff. Like the self-cutting generator and the Motivational Poster Creator. Using these toys, I made the following works of art:

I’m glad I picked a short URL. I was close to passing out as it was.

I’ve been known to re-post a few of the videos I’ve found over on HTATBL too. Like this trail video for example. I wouldn’t even WALK this trail, and almost panic watching it!

Y.I.K.E.S. !!

And just because I’d like to share them, here are a couple of recent pictures I took:

I believe this bush would’ve spoken to me, but it looks like I missed the fire. Still, I listened for awhile just in case.
