Rock and Roll

On Wednesday night I joined Jeff P and Oli for a little trail maintenance. After an exhausting ride into the wind to the top of the creek trail, I found the other two up on the hillside already working. I had an apprehensive feeling when I saw Jeff P messing with large boulders so far from the trail…

Creek Trail
Two Drains were added, and we brought in rocks to narrow the trail

The project of the night was to put in a choke. There was a section that was becoming rutted from people skidding into an upcoming downhill turn. A fast straightaway in the trees would allow people to get their speed up, but when they came around the corner, they’d notice that they needed to scrub off a lot of speed quickly.

Arranging the Rocks

Since Oli had just taken a header off the rock drop and broken his helmet, he was on rake duty. Lucky bastard. Jeff P led me through a choke cherry patch, and up the hillside where the “good” rocks were. To get people to slow down before the turn, we started narrowing the trail coming into the turn with some large rocks. We also added a couple drains to divert water off the trail.

Try and move THIS rock, sucka!

The larger rocks had to be jacked up with smaller rocks, using a pick for a lever. They crashed down the hillside as far as gravity would take them, and then we he had to lift and turn them the rest of the way to their final resting spots. Luckily there was a thorny thicket of choke cherry at the bottom we had to get through before reaching the trail. We’d work together for a bit, and then take turns. At one point I felt a funny tearing sensation below my belly button. Probably nothing…

Digging in the Step

Oli had a nice hole dug for the step by the time we got the rock down to the trail. After the rock was in place, and the fill dirt put back in, things were starting to look pretty cool. These guys do nice work.

Finished Choke and Step

There wasn’t much time to test out our creation, as it was about 8:45 and starting to get dark. We hopped on the bikes and made our way down the trail. We didn’t have lights, but the pace wasn’t what I’d call slow. Jeff P had his BOB trailer attached, and still made pretty good time down the trail. He didn’t even slow down much for the log crossing, the trailer bouncing wildly into the air behind him. The clamor of the tool laden trailer reminded me of a chuck wagon. I imagined pots and pans banging together as he descended, and it made me laugh. There was even one time when sparks shot off the back of the trailer when he took a tight corner and the trailer hit a sizable chunk of granite.

Looking back up the Trail

By the time we got to the Postal Route and Jackrabbit, it was completely dark. These trails are almost completely smooth though, so it was easy to ride by memory. I rode home for a quick shower and a tall glass of Mirror Pond Pale Ale before immediately passing out for the night.

I got to ride the trail the next day. I was only able to appreciate our handiwork for about 1.25 seconds, as the trail is pretty fast. Still, I think the new obstacle did it’s job, because I got my bike down to speed in time as we had intended. Although not necessarily challenging, this new obstacle makes the trail more interesting.

I’m looking forward to the next trail maintenance party. Although I wouldn’t mind doing a little rake or shovel work next time!

At the Pump Track

We visited Marcus’s Pump Track On Memorial Day, and I’m here to say that the track is evolving nicely! You can now ride the track either direction and keep pretty good momentum.  You can go around the track several times without even pedaling!  The only thing that’ll stop you is exhaustion.  It’s a great workout.

I brought my 20″ BMX this time, and the bike’s shorter wheelbase was very conducive to the tight track. Kristy is looking forward to bringing her 24″ Redline for the next session.

The next phase is in the works, an “S” turn that will allow you to cut across the track to reverse directions. Can’t wait to try it! Here’s some of the action…

Memorial Day Weekend

Last week we were having temperatures in the 90′s. The kind of weather that tricks you into putting your warm clothes away for the year. It’s been a different story this weekend though, with a storm system lingering over the area. It almost feels like coastal weather, with gray skies and intermittent rain showers.

The riding in Ash Canyon is fantastic with the wet packed sand and happy green plants; however, bring some rain gear because you will most likely get wet! We had a great lunch ride on Friday with the gang. Fair weather for the climb, and then a mix of rain an hail for the descent. It wasn’t till we got back to town that things started getting a little cold and miserable, mostly due to insufficient clothing…shorts, short fingered gloves, no ear protection, etc.

I’m sure there are some campers that have been bummed out about this wet weather, but I’m loving it. It was just what I needed to slow me down and force me to take a rest. I’ve spent many an hour in the easy chair this weekend, enjoying a book and a small fire.  My batteries are starting to feel recharged after having the life sucked out of me by all the Bike to Work Week planning and festivities.

I hope everyone is enjoying their weekend!

Bike Carson PSA

And now, a Public Service Announcement from Bike Carson…

My friend (we’ll call him “Mike”) sent me the following email today.

Thank you to who is doing all the work on Upper Baldy (the Baldy Green to Creek Trail Connector); it looks and rides great!! But if anyone knows who found and moved a shovel that was placed under some bushes at the east end of Upper Baldy, it would be greatly appreciated if it could get returned or if I could get notified of its new location.

If you’re hiking or riding a trail, and you find a shovel or other tool stashed in the bushes, it is most likely not abandoned. Often times trail workers will stash tools along the trails they are working on so they don’t have to keep carrying them back and forth to the work site. Please leave the tools where they are, as someone plans to come back and work on the trail you’re enjoying!

If anyone knows the whereabouts of “Mike’s” shovel, let me know, or just put it back where you found it.

Thank you, and happy trails!

Jason and Tasha
This old 70′s era Schwinn tandem recently left Mike Garcia’s collection, and ended up in the hands of Jason and Tasha. Here they are mounted up and about to leave the great and all important Banana Bread Parley. Still waiting for the ride report…

Visit to Veltec

Last week Kristy and I had the opportunity to visit Veltec, a distributor of some of the finest names in the cycling business. You could safely say that Veltec is at the complete opposite end of the spectrum from WalMart. Veltec relocated from Monterey, California to Carson City in late 2006, and distributes cycling brands such as Colnago, Sidi, Descente, She Beest, and Vredestein.

Sidi Shoes!
Lots and Lots of Sidi Shoes

Up until last week, I imagined Veltec as a small place, distributing bicycles to area shops. Upon entering the big warehouse though, I realized and learned that they are quite large and distribute to all of North America! I believed it too, when I saw how many pairs of Sidi shoes they had.

James Winchester was kind enough to take us throughout the operation and show us the warehouse, the build area, and introduced us to many of the people in the offices. One of the highlights of the tour was the Colnago Ferrari. I forgot the figure that James gave me on the purchase price, but I found one online for $15,499!

Throughout the office area there were many displays of collectors items and memorabilia, like the Colnago Extreme-C (pictured above) signed by Michael Rasmussen.

Thanks to James and the crew for the nice tour, and it was nice of Veltec to help us (and participate) with Carson City’s Bike to Work Week. Veltec is a great addition to Carson City!

Bicycle Maintenance Clinic

000_0993

There is one more Bicycle Maintenance Clinic left to attend. This week’s topic; what to wear when commuting by bike.

These very informative clinics provide necessary instruction to the experienced and novice cyclist, and have contributed greatly to the success of Bike Month in Carson City.

Thanks Dennis!
