Lunch Rides
It really warmed up this week. The snow has been taking its sweet time melting though, so we stuck to the road. It was in the 60’s for Friday’s ride, and we even got to wear our shorts and knickers. Friday was my favorite ride of the week. Kristy, Sandie, Marcus, and I rode out to the Franktown Road turnoff in Washoe Valley and back. We had a tailwind from the south, so we were flying along at 26mph on the flats going out Old 395. We felt like Superheros! The headwind cut our speed in half for the return trip though, and we were lucky to keep a 13 mph pace. It was one of the best fitness rides of the year to date, and I had an exercise high going the rest of the work day.
Commute Report
Bicycle commuting has been been a lot of fun these days. It’s gone from a survival challenge to a fun, fast ride. I’ve shaved off a lot of time from my 20 minute January snow and ice commutes. In fact, Friday’s commute was probably the fastest on record at 8 minutes door to door. It was almost like cheating! Didn’t have to put a foot down once. With all the extra time, I’ll have to extend my rides a bit. If I can get out the front door in time that is…
If you’re still looking for a good reason to commute by bike, Crude Oil for April delivery rose to a record $102.64 a barrel this week. Prices are up 66 percent from a year ago!
I’ve seen a lot of great commuter bikes at the bike shops during recent visits. High quality machines at affordable prices. A bicycle purchase is easy to justify when you consider the cost of operating an automobile these days. A bicycle will pay for itself after missing just a few gas fill-ups. And not only is riding to work much more fun than driving, it’s a great way to squeeze some exercise into your busy schedule.
Bike Carson Logo
A Bike Carson logo is in the works. Scott (aka xd) and a friend are working on this project.
Bike Month
Jeff P and I have been working hard on planning May’s Bike Month. So far we’ve gotten some sponsors on board for a Bike to Work Week movie night, and free coffees for bike commuters on Bike to Work Day. Jeff P will also be taking one of the City Supervisors to work via tandem bicycle on Bike to Work Day! I’ll share more with you as we nail down some of the details.
Fuel Up
Fueling up your bicycle engine can be delicious. Last night we went to the Pizza King in Moundhouse (near the turnoff to Virginia City) for some recovery food. The Pizza King, formerly Nick’s Pizza from the downtown area in the 90’s, has by far the best pizza (at a great price) in the area. The location is a bit awkward, but is worth the trip out there.

I would be smiling too if that was my lunch hour ride on Friday!
Looks like it was a great day.
An 8 minute commute? That is almost not worth riding. You might as well walk (in fact you could do the silly walk and get there in 10 minutes!). It takes me 15 minutes just to get ready to ride (in good weather)! :^)
i’ve seen moser’s walk; it’s not very silly. his right leg isn’t silly at all and the left leg merely does a forward aerial half turn every alternate step.
I didn’t spend too much time at the Ministry of Silly Walks, so my walk was never quite perfected.
There is THIS though!
That (silly walk generator) is just TOO silly.
This is the silliest blog I have ever been in.
Good day sir.
shorts in february…. looking pretty good!
Jeff, how do you find that stuff…Hilarious…
The tailwind in the back going out is great but a curse in disguise. If I can help it, I always ride into the wind on the way out and then with the wind on the way home. It helps keep you from getting too carried away on the way out and ending up a long way from home when you turn into the wind.
